2 Amritsar residents in police net for extortion bid

The police have arrested two youths for allegedly making an attempt to extort money from a local trader, identified as Bhupinder Singh of posh Ranjit Avenue area, here. The police said one of them sought the money posing as gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The accused were identified as Prabhjot Singh of Ranjit Vihar and Sanjiv Kumar of Faizpura. The police have recovered a .32 bore revolver with five cartridges from their possession.

The victim told the police that two days ago, a youth came on a bike (PB-02-BR-0305) and pasted a note on his car, which was parked outside his flat. He said thereafter, the youth fled the scene.

He said, “In the note, an unidentified person claiming as Lawrence Bishnoi demanded Rs10 lakh. The person also threatened to kill my children if I informed the police. In the letter, the accused threatened that I would have to pay Rs20 lakh if the police came to my rescue.” The police said the accused had asked Bhupinder to reach near C-block market of Ranjit Avenue. According to the victim, when he reached the spot, the accused came to take the money. But after hearing the siren of a police patrolling party, they fled from the spot.

Investigating officer Robin Hans said thereafter, Bhupinder Singh informed the police about the incident.

“With the help of CCTV cameras, we traced the car used in the crime. Thereafter, we arrested Prabhjot, a share market investor, and Sanjiv, who runs a school van. During a preliminary probe, the police did not find any connection of a gangster in the case. They chose an illegal way to make easy money as Prabhjot knew the victim,” he said. The suspects were produced in a court, which sent them to police remand for further investigation.

Man murdered over monetary dispute

Monetary dispute turned ugly when a man killed a person after hitting some blunt weapon here late Wednesday evening. The victim was identified as Amrik Singh, a resident of Kot Atma Ram.

The incident came to light when Amrik Singh did not return home and his family informed the police. The accused, Anand Kumar, a resident of Jaspal Nagar area, had dumped the body in a vacant plot after the murder. The police have recovered the same and handed over to family members after the postmortem.

According to information, Amrik Singh had borrowed money from Anand Kumar. However, he was not returning the same. On Wednesday, he went to Anand Kumar’s house for taking the same. He informed his family members about it. When he reached at Anand Kumar’s residence a verbal dual erupted. In a fit of anger, he allegedly hit Amrik with some blunt weapon killing him on the spot. The accused tried to dump the body in a canal. But due to police naka, he dumped the body in a vacant plot. The police have arrested the accused.
