One person was killed and his elder brother injured in an attack by some persons at Jhabal village here on Friday night. Failure to pay a borrowed amount of Rs 1,500 was cited as the main reason behind the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Tarsem Singh (40) and the injured as Avtar Singh, elder brother of the victim, who received serious injuries and was admitted to the local Civil Hospital.

Inspector Prabhjit Singh, SHO, Jhabal, said the victim’s family had borrowed Rs 2,000 from Sajan Singh, president of the labour union of Jhabal. While part of the amount had been returned, the remaining Rs 1,500 was yet to be paid.

As Sajan Singh wanted the balance amount to be repaid to him immediately, he, armed with iron rods, sharp-edged weapons, etc, along with his brother Labhu, Jashandeep Singh and an unidentified person, all residents of Jhabal, trespassed into the residence of Tarsem Singh where they hit Tarsem Singh with an iron rod. He was hit on the head as a result of which he died on the spot. Avtar Singh received injuries when he tried to intervene to save his brother.

All the accused — Sajan Singh, Labhu, Jashandeep Singh and the unidentified person — had been booked under Sections 302, 354, 506 and 34 of the IPC, said the Jhabal SHO.

The accused escaped from the spot after the incident, added the SHO.
