51 panchayats honoured for improvement in gender ratio

Amritsar, January 17

The district administration on Friday honoured 51 panchayats in the district, where gender ratio of girls improved significantly. The function was organised by the Women and Child Development Department and Deputy Commissioner Office at Government Senior Secondary School for girls here under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. Representatives of 150 panchayats from across the district participated in the function and these panchayats were honoured by the chief guest, Assistant Commissioner Alka Kalia.

Addressing the gathering Kalia, said a girl’s education is lifeline to create a developed and healthy society. She congratulated the 51 panchayats and honoured them for better sex ratio. Kalia said these villages would be a source of inspiration for other panchayats and society. She called the panchayats to eliminate the practice of female feticide. Kalia said this would bring a healthy change in the society. She also briefed various schemes being run by the Women and Child Development Department, Betti Bachao Betti Padhao, Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) and nutrition campaign.

Addressing the event, Congress city president Jitendra Sonia said, “We should encourage education for girls. There should be no gender inequality in the society.”

Hardeep Kaur, District Program Officer, threw light on Shakhi- one stop centre. She said the centre was being run at Civil Hospital Amritsar where women facing any problem can get help by contacting them. She also enlightened the residents about the women helpline number. An exhibition was also organised on the occasion giving an effective message to the people about female feticide.

Kuldeep Kaur, Child Development Project Officer said the efforts of the department had a positive impact on the society and the gender ratio of Amritsar which was 889 would improve further. — TNS
