MC acts against owners for bylaw violations

Just five days before the scheduled hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Municipal Corporation today acted against hotels for violation of rules. The MC teams sealed five hotels for violating the rules. Besides, Rs 53 lakh was recovered from the defaulting hoteliers.

A city-based activist, Rohit Sabharwal, had filed a CWP in the High Court in 2018 against the violation of parking norms and building bylaws at city hotels. The next hearing in the case is on February 4.

A team, comprising assistant town planners Harwinder Singh and Mohan Singh, and building inspectors, inspected the hotels today. Harwinder said they inspected 30 hotels today. “We have sealed five hotels for violation of norms. Besides, two hotels were found closed. Moreover, Rs 53 lakh was recovered today,” he added.

The MC officials claimed that they would continue the drive against the erring hotels. Mohan Singh said the hotels were located in Chaura Bazaar and the nearby areas. He said the violations of parking norms, floor area ratio (FAR) and height were found at the hotels.
