35-year-old man commits suicide

Bathinda: A 35-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at Thermal Colony here. A suicide note was recovered from the spot and the police are investigating the matter. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Chandarkant, resident of Thermal Colony and was working in a private firm here. The police said the incident took place around 9 pm on Saturday when the man was alone at his room. After being informed by residents, members of a city-based NGO reached there, that further informed the police. Sources in the police department said the deceased had named a female friend and her father for abetting suicide. The police took the suicide note in its possession and was investigating the matter. Laado Games for girls begin

Bathinda: Under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative, sports events — Laado Games — started amid much fanfare in the district on Sunday. These games are being held for the first time under the initiative in which girls are showcasing their athletic prowess in eight different sports events. Deputy Commissioner B Srinivasan said "The main motive of these games is to motivate girl students toward sports. The winning students will be felicitated and they will be provided with certificates and medals. Girl students have been participating in athletics, kho-kho, kabaddi, tug-of-war, volleyball, badminton, football and chess." He said one best athlete would be selected from every block who would participate in the district-level games, which would be held after January 26.. TNS

14 bottles of liquor seized

Sahnewal: The Koom Kalan police recovered 14 bottles of illicit liquor from a resident of Lakhowal village on Sunday. The police arrested Inderjit Kumar with 14 bottles of illicit liquor. He sold the liquor at his grocery shop. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him at. TNS
