Raikot, June 25

The body of a youth, who died in a road accident in Saudi Arabia on May 15, was brought to his native village Rupa Patti in Raikot subdivision today.

The deceased has been identified as Gurjit Singh (27). He went to Saudi Arabia four years ago.

Members of his family said they had exhausted their resources on sending Gurjit abroad in search for greener pastures.

People from all walks of life attended the last rites. Gurjit is survived by his parents, wife and a seven-year-old son.

The bereaved family and villagers thanked Mohali-based non-governmental organisation (NGO) Helping Hapless for bringing back the body without charging anything.

Gurjit’s uncle, Shamsher Singh, said: “We were shocked when Gurjit’s friends told us that bringing back the body would entail a huge cost.”

Subsequently, the family contacted Helping Hapless convener Amanjot Kaur Ramoowalia, who coordinated with the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia for arranging the transportation of the body free of cost.

Helping Hapless convener Amanjot Kaur Ramoowalia called upon the youth of the state to explore options in India rather than moving abroad.
