City judoka making her mark

LUDHIANA: City-based judoka Shubhneen Gill has established herself in the field of judo by winning medals in the state as well as national-level tournaments.

City-based judoka Shubhneen Gill has established herself in the field of judo by winning medals in the state as well as national-level tournaments.

Shubhneen, a student of Class XII at DAV Public School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar branch, started playing martial arts event when she was in Class VII. Since then, she has been winning accolades in individual category besides playing a major role in annexing team honours for her side she represented.

Her mentor Amandeep Singh said Shubhneen Gill was the lone student from DAV School, BRS Nagar branch, to win medals in the DAV national sports at the cluster, state and national-level judo competitions for the last five years.

“At cluster-level tournaments, Shubhneen has been emerging champion in addition to clinching gold medals in the state championship for five consecutive years and also won two silver and three bronze medals at the DAV national sports,” he said.

Besides, Shubhneen bagged four gold medals during this period in the district championships organised by the Punjab Education Department; an equal number of gold medals in the District Judo Tournaments conducted by the District Judo Association, Ludhiana.

She also stamped her supremacy by securing gold medal in her weight group during the competition held under the ongoing Tandarust Punjab Mission, recently.

In the Punjab Judo Championship organised by the Punjab Judo Association at Bhatinda, Shubhneen finished as the first runner-up; secured bronze at Ropar in the competition conducted by the Punjab Sports Department under Khelo India scheme and won bronze in the state championship held by the Punjab Education Department at Gurdaspur recently.

Amandeep Singh appreciated Shubhneen for her consistent performance at different tournaments. He exuded confidence that the judoka would bring glory to the country by winning medals at international level competitions.

Principal Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu lauded Shubhneen and her coach Amandeep Singh for brining fame to the school and wished good luck for future tournaments.
