Patiala, January 10

Eminent personalities, including Punjabi writer Dr Dalip Kaur Tiwana and Director, World Punjabi Centre, Prof Balkar Singh, shared their views on Punjabi literature in diaspora on the second day of the World Punjabi Literary Conference at Punjabi University here on Thursday.

An exhibition of oil and digital paintings made by noted artists was inaugurated at the university’s museum and art gallery. The exhibition is part of the three-day conference.

Punjabi critics and writers at the conference said literature could play a major role in giving the right direction to improve the social standard of a country.

Litterateurs, who have come to participate in the conference from India and abroad, shared experiences of their life. Dr Tiwana, who presided over the function, said authors should take special care while penning down their thoughts.

She said, “A writer always writes according to his or her surroundings. Great works, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, were written on Punjab’s land, which justify that the cultural and educational structure of the area was strong and momentous at that time. Now, people have ignored their culture.”

Dr Manmohan Maheru, a special guest of honour from England, rejected the statement that diasporas were being discriminated in the UK.

Books penned by Indian and foreign authors and a journal, “Akhar”, were also released on the occasion.
