With four deadlines missed, the construction work on the Western bypass, an ambitious project of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar along the Western Yamuna Canal (WYC) to provide relief to commuters, is yet to be completed.

The PWD (B&R) is still to install the side railing along the complete stretch, while the Railways has not completed its work, delaying the project further. It may take around one and a half months for the completion of the work.

The work on around 6.5-km long and 10-m wide project, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs 57.09 crore, was started on February 8, 2016, to connect the Kaithal-Kachwa road and National Highway-44 at Uchana village to smoothen the traffic flow in the city. It was to be completed on March 31, 2018, but the authorities got the deadline extended to April 30 and later May-end and further to June-end.

The previous governments had also announced to construct this project, but did not start the work. Khattar had also promised the same and assured relief from traffic congestion in the city. During his visit in January, he had also directed the authorities concerned to beautify both sides of the bypass with trees and lights. He had also ordered to install crash barriers and construct the retaining wall along the WYC for the safety of the commuters, but still the work is not completed.

Sachin Bhardwaj, a resident of the city, said the project was started to give relief to commuters, but even after several deadlines, they could not get benefit of this project. He said officials should take the CM’s announcements seriously and should work promptly on these so that the people could get benefits.

Virender Jakhar, SE, PWD, B&R, said they had completed their work in June. The work got delayed due to the widening of the canal and now they had started the work of erecting the crash barriers along the stretch and it would be completed soon. He said the Railways had yet to complete their part of the work.

KP Singh, XEN, Railways, said they had started work at the underpass and it would take around one and a half months for its completion. He said due to the rains, the work had got delayed.
