Kapurthala, February 16

The construction work of a bridge to connect 16 villages of the Mand area with Sultanpur Lodhi was started today in the presence of local MLA Navtej Singh Cheema.

He said the bridge would facilitate residents, including farmers, school and college students, of these villages to travel easily to other parts of the state. Sultanpur Lodhi Congress MLA Navtej Singh Cheema said people of these villages were facing a lot of hardships during the rainy season as the authorities had to dismantle the pontoon bridge due to the rise in the water level of the river.

Cheema said people from these remote villages were left with no option but to travel on boats to reach nearby towns or to return home.

While Cheema is quite upbeat about the starting of the work, his rival from the Aam Aadmi Party Sajjan Singh Cheema has targeted him for not ensuring quality work. The latter posted a video on Facebook this morning, showing how poor quality bricks were being used for works in the holy town ahead of the religious programme.

The MLA said: “Brick-kilns are shut for the past four months and wet bricks were wrongly procured. At the site where Sajjan made the video, I had already got the work to raise a wall along Dalla road stopped.”
