Woman held for cheating goldsmiths

CHANDIGARH:The UT police today arrested a woman, Jaspreet Kaur (31), a resident of Kharar, who used to cheat goldsmiths and had stolen jewellery from Sector 22 and Sector 56 jewellery stores.

The UT police today arrested a woman, Jaspreet Kaur (31), a resident of Kharar, who used to cheat goldsmiths and had stolen jewellery from Sector 22 and Sector 56 jewellery stores. According to police sources, other accused in the case, Balbir Kaur, is still absconding.

Two women - Jaspreet Kaur and Balbir Kaur – had purchased jewellery worth Rs 3.21 lakh from Nikka Mal Babu Ram Jewellers in Sector 22 here on April 8 last year. An FIR in this regard was registered under Sections 420, 406, 506 and 120-B of the IPC at the Sector 17 police station on the complaint of Akhil Jain of Nikka Mal Babu Ram Jeweller on Friday.

On Wednesday, three women had visited Verma Jewellers in Sector 56 and purchased jewellery worth Rs 1.91 lakh.  An FIR was registered under Section 420 of the IPC on the complaint of Piyush Verma of Verma Jewellers at the Sector 39 police station.

According to the complainant, the women claimed that they had made online payment and that the amount would be credited in half an hour. Later, the complainant came to know that these women had also taken away jewellery worth Rs 2.21 lakh from Shree Ram Jewellers in Sector 56 in a similar manner.

On Friday, inspector Jaspal Singh Bhullar received a tip-off that a woman, who used to cheat gold smiths, was roaming in the Sector 22 market with a motive to sell the jewellery. A special team was constituted and it nabbed the woman from Sector 22 here.

According to the police, the accused, along with her ally, used to visit jewellery stores wearing expensive clothes. Later, she used to offer to make payment through a cheque saying that she was not carrying cash. If the shopkeeper refused to accept cheque, she further used to ask the shopkeeper to send ornaments to her house so that she could make the payment at her residence.

When a person from the Sector 22 jewellery store reached her home to handover the jewellery, she again deceived him by saying that she would make the payment through a cheque as there was no cash at home. He accepted the cheque, which later bounced when it was presented in the bank for clearance.Jaspreet and her accomplice Balbir had purchased gold jewellery worth Rs 3.21 lakh. When the complainant asked for the payment, they both threatened him to implicate in a false case of rape and molestation.

On Friday, the accused woman was produced before the Duty Magistrate. Today, she was produced before the court of CJM, which sent her to 2-day police remand. Investigation is on in the case.
