Moga, April 23

Standing wheat crop on 150 acres was destroyed in fire incidents at Bughipura, Mehron, Bahona, Mehmewala, Mangewala and Thammanwala villages in Moga on Tuesday.

Most of the people who lost their crop had taken the land on lease for cultivation. Fire tenders were summoned to douse the flames but by the time they reached the villages, the crop had been damaged. Residents of Bughipura village alleged that the fire tenders reached late, due to which the crop loss increased manifolds.

However, officials of the Fire Department alleged that farmers misbehaved with them at Bughipura. They met Anita Darshi, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Commissioner of Moga MC, and sought security while on duty in villages. The fire officials also alleged that they were manhandled by farmers.

In another incident, Over 90 acres of wheat crop got destroyed today at Deepewal village in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, and other villages after some persons threw a cigarette in the fields at a village near Lohian, due to which adjoining fields also caught fire. Over 20 farmers got affected and suffered losses in the fire.
