Four soldiers, including a decorated officer, were killed fighting infiltrators and militants in the Valley. Every other day such news appears. We hardly hear that Pakistani soldiers were killed. Are we fighting only militants and infiltrators and losing our precious soldiers? Pakistan is training and using these militants as its frontline army and inflicting casualties without losing its own soldiers. Don’t we have any answer to this strategy? Our celebrity sportsmen are getting elated on (supposedly) receiving an invitation from Imran Khan’s office. We all know that he will have to follow the instructions of the army establishment. It is time our leadership chalks out some tough measures.

Not in Imran’s hands

Apropos the article ‘The man of the moment’ (August 8), with Imran Khan at the helm, all hopes are pinned on him to recalibrate the ties with India by encouraging trade and people-to-people contact. The writer aptly pointed out that Imran is required to either take Army into his confidence and make progressive strides vis-à-vis India or directly take on the army by opposing its inimical ideas. However, flipping through the annals of history, the proposed roads, as of now, seem to be difficult for the PM-designate to tread. It’s an open secret that the army has been instrumental in Imran’s meteoric rise. It will be tough for him to pull to the opposite direction and convince the army to normalise trade ties and promote brotherhood with India.

Modi magic wanes

Refer to ‘What Modi rule tells us about ourselves’ (August 8); although no major financial misadventures have happened so far, the quality of governance has taken a beating due to PM Modi’s preoccupation with foreign tours, at the cost of public money. The sojourns have failed to bring in the intended foreign investments, though Modi might have made some foreign friends. The man in the street is unfazed with his chest-thumping and self-eulogising acts. With complete dominance of one person over all constitutional establishments, the democratic scenario is acquiring monstrous dimensions.

Women’s safety concerns

The Supreme Court’s directive to media not to publish pictures and videos of rape victims is a welcome move to prevent the marring of the girl’s image in society, but as a citizen, I wonder what prevents the proper implementation of laws against the perpetrators of such heinous crime. When the whole nation raises a hue and cry over bringing about amendments to the women’s safety Bill by introducing capital punishment and setting up fast-track courts, why does nothing come of it? Who is accountable for such delays and letting this crime happen again and again? If our laws cannot ensure the safety of women in our country, all other developments across the spectrum hold little value.

Reach out to Valley youth

Apropos the editorial ‘A shot at peace’ (August 7), it is heartening that the state government has drafted a policy to restore tranquility in the Valley. What is needed is strict implementation of the surrender policy in letter and spirit. Empathy and love can heal the deepest wounds. The aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir should be fulfilled as the state has witnessed tumultuous time for decades. Credible efforts like this polciy deserve applause. The government should ensure the safety of the people and make efforts to stem the rising tide of militancy. It is vital to restore hope among the youth.

Reconsider OCI cards

The ‘London Declaration’ has the support of many gurdwaras. Britain has over 300 gurdwaras. Of these, about 150 are controlled by Singh Sabha Sikhs, and the rest by Ramgarhia Sikhs, Kukas Sikhs, Dalit Sikhs and individual Sikhs. Support for the referendum march is visible mostly in Singh Sabha gurdwaras. None of the other gurdwaras support this highly damaging, divisive and communal march. Since a majority of people behind this march are British citizens with OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) card, the Indian Government should reconsider its policy of issuing OCI cards to everyone.

EVMs best bet

Refer to the editorial ‘Opposition push for ballot paper’ (August 8); can the parties that now seek the ballot paper say with certainty that this system is free from manipulation? Tuning back to the ballot paper would amount to turning back the clock. Like the Opposition parties  who want the ballot paper to be reintroduced, the voters too have the right to exercise their option of voting only if EVMs are used. EVMs have proved their worth in election after election and are a safe bet.
