Hundreds of challans and penalties of crores of rupees seem to be no deterrence to overloading of vehicles in Yamunanagar district. Vehicles loaded above capacity continue to ply with impunity.

Officials of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Yamunanagar, have issued 498 challans for overloading from January 1 to March 25 and collected Rs 2.15 crore as fine from the violators.

“We have issued challans to a record number of 157 overloaded vehicles in January, 173 in February and 168 vehicles up to March 25 and collected about Rs 2.15 crore as fine,” says Prashant Panwar, Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Regional Transport Authority, Yamunanagar.

However, local residents continue to face problems due to overloading of vehicles. Mahipal, an arhtiya at Lakkar Mandi, Jagadhri, says that overloaded vehicles are often involved in fatal accidents. “Overloaded vehicles have been involved in accidents in which precious lives have been lost. Therefore, the local administration should take concrete steps to check overloading of vehicles in the district,” he adds.

Anil Kumar, a resident of Jathlana village, says that overloaded vehicles tend to damage roads, ultimately leading to inconvenience to local residents and commuters, especially during the monsoons.

He says that besides issuing challans, the transport authorities should also organise awareness camps for drivers and transporters to make them aware about the harms of overloading.

“Overloading is a major problem in Yamunanagar district. It is causing damage to roads and leading to accidents every day. Often, the drivers of overloaded trucks and other vehicles lose their lives in accidents. The transport authorities should take steps to make them aware about the risks of overloading and rules in this regard,” says Anil Kumar.

According to information, the district has several mining quarries. Trucks, tippers and tractor-trolleys lift sand and gravels from the quarries for supply to others places in the state.

Surinder Redhu, Assistant Secretary, RTA, Yamunanagar, says that they have formed a team, which is working tirelessly to check overloading of vehicles in the district.

“The number of overloading cases in the district has decreased as our team checks vehicles day and night to keep a check on the problem,” he adds.
