Vaibhav, Stany lead at national chess meet

JAMMU: Grand master Vaibhav Suri and international master M Stany secured a joint lead of 8 points each after the completion of nine rounds of the National Senior Open Chess Championship-2018 held at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust here on Sunday.

Grand master Vaibhav Suri and international master M Stany secured a joint lead of 8 points each after the completion of nine rounds of the National Senior Open Chess Championship-2018 held at Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust here on Sunday.

Three grand masters M Aravindh Chithambaram, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Bakre Tejas and international master CRG Krishna secured 7.5 points each to stay at the third position.

In some of the important matches played on Sunday, grand master Vaibhav Suri of Petroleum State Promotion Board defeated grand master Anurag Mhamal of Goa; grand master Bakre Tejas of Air India drew with grand master Aravindh Chithambaram; international master Stany GA of the Airports Authority of India beat grand master Sengupta Deep of State Promotion Board; while grand master GM Thipsay Praveen of Maharashtra lost to international master Krishna.

Three more rounds are to be played during this event, wherein 162 players, including 19 grand masters and 20 international masters, from 27 states and eight special units, including Air India, Railways, defence, PSPB and LIC, etc, are participating.

The matches are being conducted under the overall supervision of the All J&K Chess Association president, Atul Kumar Gupta, who is also the chairman of the organising committee.
