Haphazard constructions and the lack of basic facilities have marred the beauty of the Bir-Billing area, which is one of the finest sites across the globe to enjoy aero sport activities.

Although the state government has constituted the Special Area Development Authority   (SADA) for the famous tourist destination, there is no check on illegal and unplanned constructions. Billing is the takeoff site for paragliding and is situated at a height of 8,000 feet from the sea level. Bir, which is at 4,300 feet from the sea level, is the site for landing. Collectively, the two are known as Bir-Billing. Of late, the lush green  Bir-Billing valley  has emerged as the first choice of both domestic and foreign tourists.

Sources said in the absence of any check, several hotels and buildings had come up in the area. If the government failed to take steps to stop illegal constructions, there would be no space to even walk. The sources said the road to the area was re-carpeted nearly two years ago. However, it had developed potholes, risking the lives of commuters. Besides, the shortage of drinking water had further aggravated the situation.

Hundreds of tourists throng Billing on a daily basis for paragliding. However, there is no proper space for parking vehicles. The area also lacks a public  toilet . “All basic amenities in Bir-Billing are missing. A number of tourists throng the area daily as it has several trekking spots. However, the lack of basic facilities, including potable water and public toilets, has marred its beauty,” said Vijay Kumar, a local travel agent.
