A tragedy in Amritsar in the evening today wherein several lives were lost as speeding train mowed down onlookers, who were participating in the Dasehra celebrations, is an incident through which lessons are yet to be learnt.

Here in the city, one such celebration was held near the Dhuri railway crossing. The eyewitnesses say residents of the area near Dhuri celebrated Dasehra near the railway crossing. People were seen roaming on the railway tracks to have a glimpse of the effigies unmindful of the lurking danger from speeding trains.

The Ludhiana district administration needs to keep a strict vigil on such celebrations so that no tragedy takes place again.

It may be mentioned that the organisers claimed that they had got all the required permissions from the authorities concerned for the Dasehra celebrations. But, if permission is given to celebrate festivals near or on the railway tracks, then perhaps all are waiting for another Amritsar-like tragedy to happen.
