Thane, April 24

An undertrial lodged at a jail in Thane district of Maharashtra has been booked for allegedly smashing the glass door of the prison superintendent’s office, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday when Narayan Reddy, an accused in a case of sexual abuse, was being shifted from the Aadharwadi jail at Kalyan town to a prison in Taloja area of Navi Mumbai, an official at Khadakpada police station said.

Angry over his transfer to another facility, Reddy, while being escorted to a vehicle, ran towards the jail superintendent’s cabin and smashed its glass door, he said.

The accused received injuries and was treated at the jail hospital before being shifted to the Taloja prison, the official said.

He was booked under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the IPC.

The accused was arrested earlier this month in connection with an incident here and booked under Section 377 (pertaining to unnatural offences) and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, the official said.

After his arrest, Reddy demanded some special facilities in the jail, but when these were denied, he allegedly misbehaved with the prison staff and climbed a tree on the premises, he said.

Following this, a proposal was sent to the authorities concerned to shift him either to the Thane Central Jail or the prison in Taloja, and it was approved last week, the official added. PTI
