Amritsar, February 5

The United Akali Dal (UAD) and the SAD (Amritsar) have decided to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha election jointly. It was disclosed by UAD president Bhai Mohkam Singh and SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann here on Tuesday. Both the parties have actively participated in the Bargari morcha.

Accompanied by Sarbat Khalsa-appointed acting jathedar of Akal Takht, Bhai Dhian Singh Mand and other supporters, they were in Amritsar to attend the prayers initiated for Bibi Manjit Kaur, wife of Dal Khalsa founder Gajinder Singh, who died recently in Germany.

Mohkam Singh said they would fight the Lok Sabha elections and the SGPC elections on one platform. He said the candidates for the Lok Sabha elections would be announced shortly. “Our focus is to fight against the traditional parties, like the Congress and the SAD-BJP alliance. We may invite others to join us,” he said.

However, the other jathedars — Baljit Singh Daduwal and Amrik Singh Ajnala — were conspicuous by their absence.

“Our endeavour will be to unite the like-minded persons. There may be differences on some petty issues but these will be sorted out,” he added.

Terming Bargari morcha as a successful campaign, he said, “It was due to the overwhelming response to the morcha that the government was compelled to nab the police officials responsible for Behbal Kalan firing and sacrilege instances. The second phase of the morcha will be carried out soon.”
