Two undertrial prisoners escaped police custody while they were being taken in a police van in the district on Friday—an incident that led to the suspension of seven policemen.

Police said four prisoners—Akash, a resident of Rohtak, Deepak and Ankit, both from Delhi, and Tinku from Jhajjar— were being taken back to the district jail in Dulina after a court hearing in Sonepat. As the police slowed down at a speedbreaker near Gurugram bypass, two prisoners, Akash and Deepak, took the opportunity to escape the van through a broken iron net, sources said.

A third, Ankit, tried to follow them but was caught before he jumped down.

Sources said Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar headed search teams to find the escapees but came back empty handed.

Kumar said that the seven policemen who were accompanying the prisoners were facing a departmental inquiry. He added that police were looking for the escapees.

“Seven cops, including security in charge ESI Om Prakash, EHC Krishan and Rakesh, Head Constable Suresh, Sumit, Parminder and Mausam, and the escaped undertrials- Deepak and Akash have been booked under relevant sections of the IPC,” Randhir Singh, the policeman in charge of Jhajjar Police Station, said.
