Two pilgrims on way to Manimahesh were killed and seven others injured when the vehicle (No. PB07M0094) in which they were travelling swerved off the road and plunged into a gorge near Chahla on the Pathankot-Chamba-Bharmour national highway on Friday.
All the nine occupants travelling from Pathankot and were on their way to Manimahesh, Chamba SP Dr Monika Bhutunguru told the media.
The SP said the bodies of the deceased had been extricated from the vehicle with the help of locals. The injured were brought to Chamba medical college hospital for medical treatment.
The deceased had been identified as Kamal Singh, driver of the vehicle, and Baldev Singh, SP told.
The injured who were admitted to the local medical college hospital are Raj Kumar (28), ) Kulbir Singh (35), Surjit Pal (40), Kali Das (24), Raman Kumar (26), Amit Kumar (23) and Jonu Kumar (24). They hail from Bagthali and Jaarei villages of Kathua district in J&K.
A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered under Sections 279, 304(A) of the IPC at Chamba police station, the SP said.
