Trying to flee naka, peddler dies in mishap

A liquor smuggler was killed when a speeding Bolero pick-up jeep in which he was travelling in along with his associate overturned after breaking a police naka on the Singhawala-Tarewala link road in the district on Thursday.

SP (Investigation) Vazir Singh said the deceased had been identified as Kulwinder Singh of Mallianwala village. He was seriously injured in the mishap. The police took him to the district hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

His aide Ramandeep Singh alias Ramna of Talwandi Bhangerian village, who was driving the vehicle, had been arrested. The SP said 170 boxes of liquor (2,040 bottles) smuggled from Haryana were seized from their vehicle.

A case under Section 304-A of the IPC and the Excise Act has been registered against Ramandeep Singh at City-I police station. Further investigations were in progress, the SP said.
