Faridabad, February 6

The insanitary conditions in the city has forced the local Municipal Corporation to withhold the payment of about Rs13 crore to a company hired for disposing of garbage. The MC pays Rs1.75 crore per month to the company, Ecogreen, for the job.

The company was hired in November 2017.

Chief Engineer DR Bhaskar said the payment had been withheld since August 2018. “The MC will terminate the contract and blacklist the company if its performance does not improve by March-end,” he said.

The MC had issued a showcause notice to the company, but even then its performance had not improved, sources in the MC said.

“The company had assured the MC of cleaning the city, but its promise has proven hollow,” Bhaskar said.

The MC faced embarrassment when a team of Swachhata Survekshan found garbage dumped at several places. This resulted in the city being left out of the race for star rating.

“The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban development carrying out the Swachhata Survekshan has reportedly rejected the claim of Faridabad for star rating in view of the insanitary conditions,” said Rakesh Kumar of Swachh Bharat Mission.

Only garbage-free cities are eligible for star rating. The lack of adequate number of trucks, bins and staff had led to the delay in lifting and disposal of daily waste in the city, the sources said.

Amit Sharma, an official of Ecogreen, said the company was making efforts to make the city garbage-free by March-end.
