Irked with repeated thefts and the police failure to check the menace, residents of D-I block of South City-II Society have now taken things into their own hands. Over 180 families have got a fresh application custom developed to man the society.
The app named “My gate” allows access inside the society gate only after the registration of mobile number and one-time password (OTP) generation at every visit.
It was five major heists within 25 days that made the residents go for the app. The residents claimed that the police not just failed to crack even one case but even couldn’t prevent further incidents. It was in the first week of October, when consecutive thefts occurred in flat numbers 38, 40, 45, 47 and 48. FIRs were registered at the Sector 50 police station.
With no evident progress, the residents not just increased the number of CCTV cameras but also installed the app in the society. The app allows visitor registration only after he/she gets an OTP on his mobile number.
“We decided to fight the menace on our own and all families deposited Rs 1,000 for the enhanced security arrangements. There is a single entry and exit gate of Block D-I. We installed “My gate” app and now, outsiders who visit the society must register first to get entry. Many types of apps are available in the market and we are installing this on a trial basis,” said Ravinder Gandhi, a resident of the society.
Another resident said the initiative seems to be succeeding. Three security guards are deployed during the day and the same number during night while four CCTV cameras have also been installed but most of them are not working.
