Given the popularity of flying kites, especially in old city areas, kite-flying enthusiasts want the government to hold a state-level kite festival, where the government can invite best kite flyers from across the world.

Several city areas, especially those in the old city, had turned into a colourful canvass with kites of different colours and shapes colouring the sky.

“Such kite festivals are celebrated with grandeur in states like Rajasthan and Gujarat, and even international tourists participate in the festival. Kite festival should be celebrated in Punjab also. It is time, such festivals were celebrated here as well,” said Gagandeep Singh, a city resident.

“In fact, at this point, kite-flying is also turning into a menace because of plastic kite-strings, but people can retain their love for the centuries-old passion, without having to worry about the nuisance of plastic kite-strings,” another resident said.

“In fact, kite-flying should be a proper sports activity and the state government, especially the Tourism Department, must take steps in this direction because this can help bring tourists to the state for participation in the festival,” Raman, another resident, said.
