BARCELONA, April 28

World No. 5 Dominic Thiem captured his second title of the year after thrashing Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-4 6-0 in the Barcelona Open final today. The Austrian had been beaten by Rafa Nadal in his previous appearance in the Barcelona final in 2017 but after knocking out the 11-time French Open champion in the semifinals, Thiem easily dispatched the 23-year-old Medvedev.

Thiem made a slow start as he trailed 0-3 but he then got into a groove as he produced a number of scorching winners, including a sublime drop shot.

“It’s such an honour to win this tournament, looking at all the names who have won it,” Thiem said.

Kvitova wins second title

Stuttgart: Third seed Petra Kvitova became the first player to win a second WTA singles title in 2019, as the Czech made it through a bruising battle with eighth seed Anett Kontaveit to triumph 6-3 7-6(2) in the final of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix today. Eighteen prior tournaments had taken place in the season without a repeat singles title winner to be found, but Kvitova finally became the first woman to double her trophies for the year after her hour-and-a-half victory over the 15th-ranked Estonian. — Agencies
