THE LURE OF KHADI

Bringing the beauty and glory of India’s Fabric of Freedom to centrestage at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2019, the grand khadi showcase by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) on Sustainable Fashion Day had three stunning collections by designers Anuj Bhutani, Gaurav Khanijo and Pallavi Dhyani, which celebrated 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi. 

Bhutani showcased classic styles in khadi, inspired by Chandni Chowk’s architecture, colours and people. The line comprised relaxed salwar, kameez, dupatta, voluminous kurtas, cool dhotis, saris, scarves and turbans.

Khanijo’s collection was inspired by Ek — the numeric one in Hindi, the garments were a reminder that Gandhi was right when he called khadi an art that saves life. Pockets, detailing, sharply cut jumpsuits, airy shirts, stone-washed denim trousers and shawl jackets, handwoven in khadi blankets called khes, were eye-catching on the runway. 

The last show by Dhyani showcased garments that were practical and would be on the top of ‘everyday wardrobe essentials’ lists. Showstopper for Pallavi Dhyani was actor Sumeet Vyas, who strolled on to the ramp in a classic grey two-button suit and a white t-shirt with two black stripes.

Mrunal makes a debut 

Mrunal Thakur, who was recently seen on silver screen in Super 30, walked the ramp for the very first time. She was the showstopper for designer Alka Sharma. The actress was seen in a mulberry silk, ivory, gold lehenga with ornate embroidery, teamed by a bandhgala, full sleeve top. 

Athiya spreads monochrome magic

Athiya Shetty turned muse for designer duo Abraham and Thakore. The inspiration behind their collection was to combine the old traditional carving and printing method with new-age technology. Athiya looked gorgeous in a monochromatic frilled saree in viscose fabric and a matching shirt blouse. She kept her look very natural with open wavy hair and minimalist make-up.
