Marriage requires the merging of two separate individuals in more ways than one and the home where the bride and groom are to live is going to be an important aspect of their first few months as man and wife. Typically, men and women have polar opposite home decorating ideas so blending styles can be a bit complicated. There are going to be differences whether these are based on favourite colours or the types of electronic gadgets enjoyed on a daily basis. He likes clutter. She wants simplicity combined with luxury. So, how does a modern couple create a space for a happy marriage? Here are a few tips that can help you build a home that’s blissfully blended-
  • Settle on a theme: Decide whether you want to decorate the house with a traditional look or a contemporary one. Make sure to know your partner’s preferences as well. For instance, if you are fond of traditional designs and your spouse is fond of contemporary styles, then just opt for mix n’ match.
  • Mix and match: There are numerous ways to combine different styles in the same room. Mix and match fabric types, colours, furniture and belongings in a way that not only satisfies both parties but also brings vibrancy and interest to an interior space. Picking out paint colours can be gruelling when couples don’t see eye to eye. The majority of men gravitate towards a more muted neutral colour palette such as tans and browns. Women seem to be attracted to colours that are bright or pastel. Choose colours that will appeal to both of you. Colours will grey undertones can often work as subtle neutrals and provide a great backdrop to other colours.
  • Meet in the middle: Compromise is the key when it comes to designing the house together. Listen and be patient to each other’s needs and you will be sure to come up with a design solution that will fit both of you. If your partner has an old chair that you can’t stand but he or she really insists on including it, maybe you can compromise by painting it or reupholstering it in a colour or fabric or your choice. Sometimes this kind of compromise can lead to some really great looks.
  • Start with major pieces: Work together to choose the first couple of major pieces. It could be the sofa, the dining room table or bed frame. After that the two of you can each come up with suggestions to determine the next pieces. Try to figure out logically what items will work best with that major piece. Over time your shared style will start to develop.
  • Balance masculine and feminine elements: Avoid anything overly curvy and girly or boxy and masculine. Use subtle shapes and textures that combine the best of both worlds. For example, a leather club chair with nail head detail is masculine if the shape is boxy, but opt for a curvier shape and it becomes more female friendly.
  • Focus on your similarities: So you both love green and hate blue? Great! Focus on that and start your decision making there.
  • Don’t forget to have fun: Building a home together and getting the décor just right will take time, but it’s another opportunity to add to your pool of memories as newlyweds.
