Chandigarh, July 6

The UT Cadre Educational Employees’ Union staged a protest against the UT Education Department over suspension of teachers, heads and a principal and show-cause notices issued to teachers over poor CBSE Class X results, here at the rally ground in Sector 25 on Friday.

The protesters said they would continue their protest till the time suspension orders and show-cause notices would not be taken back by the department. The members of the union said the teachers were being harassed and humiliated by officers.

The department on Wednesday suspended a principal and four heads of government schools and shifted three in-charges. Earlier, 56 show-cause notices were given to teachers and four were suspended.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of teachers decided that a protest rally would be held against the orders at the rally ground in Sector 25 on July 9.

A delegation of the JAC members met Secretary Education BL Sharma on Friday to discuss the issue of show-cause notices and suspension orders issued to teachers, heads and principals.

The committee submitted that there are a lot of reasons behind poor results which include large number of posts of teacher lying vacant for several years, pending promotion of teachers to heads and principals, no detention policy up to Class VIII, grace marks given to students of Class IX and XI and assigning a lot of non-teaching work to teachers. Therefore, teachers are not solely responsible for the poor results.
