Guwahati, March 3

The Indian women’s team will aim to finalise a core group of players ahead of the T20I World Cup early next year when they take on England in a three-match series starting here tomorrow.

India have been doing well in the 50-overs format but they have plenty to ponder in the shortest form, having lost their previous series in New Zealand 0-3. Harmanpreet Kaur has not yet recovered from an ankle injury and in-form opener Smriti Mandhana will captain the side in her absence, providing her an opportunity to prove her as a leader.

In Harmanpreet’s absence, ODI captain Mithali Raj is also expected to play a bigger role in the three T20Is.

Stand-in captain Smriti said, “As a kid when you start playing, you always think of winning the World Cup. Obviously, there are individual targets like getting to ICC world No.1 spot. Reaching there was really pleasing, but now I have to work even harder. To stay there is much more important than getting there.”

“As a batswomen the most important thing is to reach the ICC world No. 1 position. Definitely, it was one of the goals for me but my major goal is to win the World Cup,” she added. — PTI

Cricket set for Asian Games return in 2022

Bangkok: Cricket is set for a return at the Asian Games after the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) included it in the sports programme for the 2022 edition in Hangzhou. The decision was taken at the OCA’s General Assembly here today. “Yes, cricket has been included in the sports programme for the 2022 Hangzhou Games,” OCA honorary vice-president Randhir Singh said. Cricket was dropped from the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia after featuring in 2010 and 2014, albeit without India. India opted out of the quadrennial events owing to the team’s packed international schedule. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) welcomed the decision of OCA to include cricket in the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games programme. “We welcome the decision of OCA. Which format will be played is not yet confirmed but it is a welcome decision,” said IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta. In all probability, the T20 format will be played at the Asian Games, like it happened during the 2010 and 2014 edition in Guangzhou and Incheon, respectively. PTI
