Swine flu outbreak gives sleepless nights to health authorities

With the death toll reaching nine, the swine flu outbreak continues to give sleepless nights to patients and health officials as the number of H1N1 cases Wednesday reached 63, the highest ever reported in one month, in the state.

The number of H1N1 positive cases was 57 on Tuesday. A total of 216 patients were admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Shimla, and Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College, Tanda, said health reports.

The IGMC, Shimla, and Tanda medical college and other hospitals have directed its staff, visitors and patients to take preventive and protective measures to check the spread of the virus.

The nine swine flu deaths reported in January include — Kangra(2), Una (2), Mandi (2) and one each from Shimla, Bilaspur and Solan. Kangra has reported highest number of positive cases, followed by Shimla 21, four each from Mandi and Chamba, three from Solan, two each from Bilaspur and Una and one each from Kullu and Hamirpur, the health department’s report said.

IGMC principal Dr Ravi Sharma said the elderly people with low resistance, pregnant women and new born babies faced the highest riskas temperature in the state had hit the sub-zero level, facilitating the spread of swine flu. The people were advised to keep themselves warm, avoid going to crowded places, avoid shaking hand with one another and seek medical help and undergo test if cold, cough and fever persisted for a long time, he added.
