The introduction of Student House System in government schools by the Directorate of School Education (DSEJ) is proving helpful for schools to involve students in various activities like seminars, debates and symposiums.

The school directorate in July this year had introduced the Student House System in all government schools (primary, upper primary, high and higher secondary) across Jammu Division to promote healthy competition among students.

Three houses — Eco, Peace and Wisdom — have been established in the state-run schools to explore their potential in both scholastic and co-scholastic activities.

“A majority of the houses in the schools are laying stress on raising awareness on nature preservation, global warming, cleanliness drives etc. In fact, Eco clubs in the schools are most active in government schools, wherein, lectures and seminars are being conducted to highlight this burning issue”, a school education directorate official informed.

“Earlier, there were no such activities taking place in the government schools. At the most, the students took part in rallies on some important days and came back to the institutes”, an official further said.

“Like the students of private schools, we are now hoping to participate in debate competitions and symposiums in the future. The activities are being held by all three houses in the school on a regular basis but our confidence will be enhanced only when we compete with other students”, said Shaurya, a government school student.

“Through Peace House and Wisdom House, we have come to know about the renowned personalities of the world and their contributions. The house system is definitely proving beneficial in enriching our general knowledge”, Sahil Sharmra, another student of a government school said. “Teachings of eminent world leaders, thinkers and scholars are being taught to the students of Wisdom Club so that we think positive in any situation”, he added.
