SSCB, Haryana boxers pack a punch

Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) pugilists won 11 gold medals to emerge overall champions in the men’s category at the 2nd National Junior Boxing Championship, which concluded at Chandigarh University, Gharuan, here on Tuesday.

The women’s title went to Haryana. The side won four gold, one silver and four bronze medals in the championship. 

Manipur girls with three gold, one silver and three bronze medals finished second in the tournament.

In the men’s competition, SSCB boxers were followed by Haryana in second place with three gold, two silver and five bronze medals. 

Hosts Punjab managed to win four silver medals and a bronze in the men’s category, while in the women’s championship the team won two gold medals, three silver and two bronze medals. 

On the final day of the competition, SSCB boxer Bishwamitra overcame Haryana’s Sachin 3-2 to clinch a gold medal in the 48kg class. Himachal’s Abhinav and Manipur’s N Priyobarta took home a bronze medal each. 

Another SSCB boxer, S Victor, downed Punjab’s Kuldeep Singh 4-1 in the 50kg final. Maharashtra’s Aman and UP’s Javad fetched a bronze medal each. 

Th Lakhmani, who had won a silver medal in Serbia, knocked out Manipur’s L Rabichandra 5-0 in the men’s 57kg final.

Yaithaba prevailed 3-2 over Abhinash in the 54kg category.

In the women’s competition, Haryana pugilists dominated the day with Rajni outpunching Uttar Pradesh’s Ragini 3-0 in the 46kg final and Poonam beating Manipur’s Athithro 3-2 in the 54kg final.

Punjab’s Ekta outwitted Madhya Pradesh’s Aayushi 5-0 in the 48kg final bout.

Chandigarh’s Neha and Ruthi from Mizoram won a bronze medal each in the women’s 54kg competition.
