Mohali, January 15

Residents of Sohana village, who are at the receiving end following scarcity of drinking water in their area, alleged partiality on part of the Local Government Department here.

The residents, who also staged a protest along the Airport road this morning, alleged that the village was being ignored by the authorities on purpose when it comes to carry out developmental works here.

Parminder Singh Sohana, Akali councillor from the area, claimed that the Mohali Municipal Corporation had passed a resolution to set up a tubewell in the area to redress their drinking water problem.

“The resolution in question was passed around four months ago, but the local government authorities are not giving a nod for this work for unknown reasons. The Municipal Corporation has funds for the work, but the authorities are keeping it pending,” said the councillor, alleging that there were political reasons behind ignoring developmental works in his ward.

Parminder said taps were running dry almost the entire day. “We have to awake at midnight to fill our buckets. Despite making a number of complaints in this regard, nothing is being done to redress our problem. So we are forced to stage the protest today,” said Parminder, along with other residents.

The residents rued that the condition of the government dispensary in their area was also dilapidated.

“It could collapse any day. The Municipal Corporation has also passed a resolution for its renovation almost two years ago and has been waiting for the local government authorities’ nod since then. Are they (the authorities) waiting for some mishap to happen”? asked the residents.
