Ludhiana: A 38-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in Model Gram on Saturday.  The deceased has been identified as Raj Rani.  She, along with her three children, lived separately after differences with her husband. She earned her livelihood by working as domestic help. No suicide note was recovered from the spot.  Suspecting no foul play, the police initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174, CrPC. The body has been kept at the mortuary of Civil Hospital. TNS

5 booked in assault case

Ludhiana:  The Dugri police have booked three women among five persons in an assault case. They have been identified as Charanjit Kaur, Rajvinder Singh, Manjit Kaur, and the uncle and the aunt of Charanjit, all residents of CRPF Colony. Harmeet Kaur of the locality told the police that on February 12, the suspects barged into her house and ransacked the entire premises. They also thrashed her due to old rivalry. The investigating officer, ASI Gurmel Singh, said raids were being conducted to nab the suspects. TNS

Youth caught cheating in exam

Ludhiana:  The Moti Nagar police have registered a case against a youth of Haryana, identified as Sanjay, for using a Bluetooth device in the SSC GD Constable exam. The complainant, Ankuj Bharti, said he, along with his colleague, was discharging duty as supervisor in the examination hall on February 14. They caught Sanjay using a Bluetooth device to seek help of some person to solve questions. A case under Section 66 of the IT Act has been registered against him. TNS

Three held with drugs

Ludhiana: The CIA-2 wing of the city police has nabbed three persons and recovered 150-gram charas from them. The accused have been identified as Sanjay Khanna, Surinder Rani and Pawan Kumar, residents of Basant Vihar Colony, Noorwala Road. IO ASI Mahinder Pal said a car was spotted during patrolling in Basant Vihar Colony. On suspicion, when the police party cornered the car and searched the belongings of the occupants, drugs were recovered. He said smugglers were waiting for their clients to deliver the consignment. A case under the NDPS Act was registered.

Case of Dowry harassment 

A dowry harassment case was registered by the women police station on the complaint of Kiranbir Kaur of New Kuldeep Nagar. The police have booked her husband Parminder Singh, father-in-law Jagir Singh, mother-in-law Jasbir Kaur, residents of Sherpur village, Gurdaspur. The woman alleged that she got married to the accused in 2017, following which she was subjected to mental and physical harassment for want of dowry. The accused were yet to be arrested.

Labourers join in protest

Labourers working at various brick kilns joined the protest under Jago Punjab movement outside the mini-secretariat on Saturday. The protest was organised by the members of Apang Suang Lokmanch (ASUL) and other organisations. Balwinder Singh from ASUL said a large number of labourers participated in the protest seeking protection of their rights. “There is a conspiracy to close many brick kilns in the state, due to which labourers will suffer. They want the government to increase their daily wages,” he said.  They asked the government to increase the wages of MGNREGS workers and labourers. Such protests would be organised till March 15, they said. 

Trials for LDCA centre today

The trials to select Under-19 probables will be conducted by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA), an affiliated body of the Punjab Cricket Association, for its regional coaching centre, at the GRD Academy, Hambran Road, on February 17 from 11 am onwards. Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, LDCA, said players born on or after September 1, 2000, were eligible for the trials. The selected cricketers would be registered for the LDCA centre, run at the same venue. The Ludhiana district cricket team (U-19) would also be finalised from these probables, who would take part in the Inter-District Cricket Tournament for the Punjab Championship, Chitkara said. OC
