Lahore, March 11

A shoe was hurled at former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by a student   extremist today during a function at an Islamic seminary in Lahore, a day after ink was thrown on Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in Sialkot.

As Sharif, the chief guest at Jamia Naemia seminary, Ghari Shahu, Lahore, was heading towards rostrum for a speech, a student hurled a shoe at him that hit his shoulder and ear. He also raised “Labbaik Ya Rasoolullah” slogan.

The security personnel caught the student and his accomplice and thrashed them. Later, the two students were handed over to the police, which identified the shoe thrower as Abdul Ghafoor, a former student of the seminary, and his accomplice as Sajid.

Video footage showed Sharif visibly shocked in the immediate aftermath of the incident. However, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader went ahead with his address, although reportedly shortening his speech, only to thank the organisers. — Agencies
