Medical services at the Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) at Lal Singh Basti have been affected after all three staff nurses were transferred from the centre in the past one year.

While two staff nurses were transferred in the past two months, the third was transferred from the centre around a year ago.

Now, with not even a single staff nurse working at the health centre, two pharmacists here face difficulty in completing their daily work.

Apart from looking after patients, maintaining records and carrying out clerical work, these staff nurses had to assist doctors during four outreach camps that are being organised by the Health Department at different locations in the district every month.

Moreover, staff nurses were also keeping regular tab on TB patients to ensure regular medication and monitoring.

They also assisted the doctor in the outpatient department (OPD), ensured proper management of bio-medical waste and cleanliness at the health centre.

Apart from carrying out their daily work, two pharmacists at the centre are now burdened with extra work that the staff nurses appointed here used to do earlier.

There are five ANMs (auxiliary nurse midwifery) at the centre but they mostly remain busy in field (outdoor) activity.

An employee at the health centre, requesting anonymity, said without a single staff nurse at the urban health centre, it is really difficult to manage affairs, especially on first three days of the week when the patient inflow is more.

After all three staff nurses were transferred from the centre, it has started taking a toll on the remaining staff, who are forced to stretch beyond their working hours.

Considering the large area and population that is catered by the centre, there is a requirement of at least two permanent staff nurses here.

The Centre at Lal Singh Basti caters to a population of over 38,000 with daily inflow of around 80-90 patients in the OPD section.

Civil Surgeon Dr Hari Narain Singh said, “Staff nurses who had applied for bridge course were relieved from their services temporarily from different centres and the government does not have any provision to replace them.”
