Scientists discuss rejuvenation of Sutlej via forestry

LUDHIANA: The Department of Forestry and Natural Eesources, Punjab Agricultural University, in collaboration with Himalayan Forest Research Institute (HFRI), Shimla, organised a consultative meeting for preparing a detailed project report (DPR) on Sutlej rejuvenation through forestry intervention.

The Department of Forestry and Natural Eesources, Punjab Agricultural University, in collaboration with Himalayan Forest Research Institute (HFRI), Shimla, organised a consultative meeting for preparing a detailed project report (DPR) on Sutlej rejuvenation through forestry intervention.

SK Chauhan, head, Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, welcomed the chief guest and participants from various departments and organisations, including scientists from PAU and remote sensing centre. He presented the issue concerning farmers in adoption of agro-forestry models and assured for every possible help required in the DPR. Sanjeev Thakur, nodal officer, river project, HFRI, presented the background and objective of the meeting.

The inaugural session was addressed by IM Chhiba, eminent scientist, and consultant at Tata Trust. He laid emphasis on the revival of river system which had played vital role in agricultural productivity in Punjab.

Sandeep Sharma, scientist at HFRI, invited discussion and feedback to improve the DPR. AS Dogra, IFS (PCCF Punjab, retd), shared experiences of integrated watershed development project implemented in various states and making use of the same in present DPR.
