New Delhi, January 11

The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Delhi High Court judge Sanjiv Khanna for elevation as judges of the top court which is functioning with only 26 judges against a sanctioned strength of 31 judges.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the five-member Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Thursday. It was announced on top court’s website on Friday.

Other members of the Collegium are Justice AK Sikri, Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana and Justice Arun Mishra.

“While recommending the names of Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna, the Collegium has taken into consideration combined seniority on all-India basis of Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts, apart from their merit and integrity. The Collegium has also kept in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court, as far as possible, to all the High Courts,” a resolution adopted by the Collegium said.

“The Collegium has discussed names of Chief Justices as well as senior puisne Judges of all High Courts, eligible for elevation to the Supreme Court. The Collegium is of the considered view that at present the following persons are more deserving and suitable in all respects than other Chief Justices and senior puisne Judges of High Courts, for being appointed as Judges of the Supreme Court of India,” the resolution read.

The two appointments would take the strength of the Supreme Court to 28 against its sanctioned strength of 31.
