Girls will now be admitted to Sainik Schools, which till now only allowed boys.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved a proposal for the admission of girls in Sainik Schools from the 2021-22 session. The admissions will be done gradually.

The decision was taken following success of Ministry of Defence’s pilot project for admission of girls in Sainik School, Chhingchhip, Mizoram, two years ago.

Rajnath directed the authorities concerned to ensure availability of necessary infrastructure and sufficient female staff in Sainik Schools for smooth implementation of the directive.

The decision was in line with the government objective towards gender equality, enabling greater participation of women in armed forces, said a statement by the Ministry of Defence.
