New Delhi, April 22

A 29-year-old merchant navy officer working with a Hong Kong-based company was arrested for allegedly stalking and harassing several students of a women’s college of Delhi University in south Delhi, said a police official.

He has been sent to judicial custody. Three mobile phones he used specifically to send vulgar messages to the girls have been seized from him.

The accused has been identified as Suraj Dey. He was tracked and nabbed when on April 17 a Delhi University student lodged a complaint against him. She met the accused in Amar Colony market, the DCP said.

“He said he was looking for a PG accommodation for his girlfriend in the area,” the girl had told police official, adding that she agreed and they exchanged numbers.

Afterwards, Dey started messaging and calling the girl seeking information about PGs, but later on started flirting with her. When she didn’t respond to his advances, he started sending her lewd messages and pictures. Later on, Dey reportedly threatened the girl as well when she stopped responding to his messages, he said.

During investigation, the official asked other students of the college if they had faced similar instances, following which four more girls came forward and narrated their ordeals to him. It was discovered that the accused was using multiple phone numbers and would call and threaten the students, if they blocked his numbers, the DCP added.
