Abohar, August 23

Without naming its alliance partner BJP that recently claimed having enrolled 2 lakh members in Punjab or the grand old ruling Congress in the state, senior Akali Dal leader and former minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon said the Shiromani Akali Dal had adopted a unique membership drive in fully democratic and transparent manner, unlike other political parties.

At a joint meeting of party workers belonging to Abohar and Balluana constituencies at Nanaksar Tobha Gurdwara near the new grain market here on Friday, he said a self-attested copy of the Aadhaar Card had to be attached with each membership form that would carry contact number also. This, he claimed, was different from the norms adopted by other political parties.

Sekhon was welcomed by Suresh Satija and Gurinder Singh Jakhar, presidents of Abohar urban and rural blocks, respectively.

The meeting emerged as show of strength in Abohar that is considered as stronghold of the BJP. Sekhon told party workers to deposit membership forms till August 31 at the state headquarters of the party to facilitate election of delegates.
