Road Safety Week begins in city

National Road Safety Week commenced here today. Helmets were distributed among motorists to sensitise them to traffic rules. This year ‘Sadak Suraksha – Jeevan Raksha’ has been kept as the theme of the Road Safety Week.

Commissioner of Police, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, launched the traffic awareness week at BMC Chowk, and said the move was aimed at making the people to obey traffic rules. From now onwards school heads would also be asked to discontinue the practice of students bringing two-wheelers or four wheelers to school.

He said students from different educational institutions would be deployed at various chowks and roads to appeal residents to follow the traffic rules. They would approach the offenders for discontinuing the practice of violating traffic rules, that could also lead to fatal injuries.

Bhullar said during the week the thrust would be laid on informing the people about the traffic rules. During the week special programmes would also be held at various points across the city to make the people aware about the traffic norms.

Bhullar said on the first day of the week, helmets were distributed among the motorists and subsequently, painting competitions for school students would be held on February 5. Awareness campaign regarding seat belt and helmets would be held on February 6. Awareness drive regarding zebra crossing, traffic lights, yellow lines and white lines would be held on February 7.

He said: “Traffic awareness rally of students will be held on February 8. Free medical camp for auto rickshaw and taxi drivers will be held at the Police lines on February 9 and free pollution check- up will be organised on February 10.
