Jammu, January 22

Notwithstanding the assurance of the BJP to address their grievances, the “annoyed” West Pakistan refugees on Tuesday threatened to hold a parallel gathering on February 3 near the venue of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in Samba district.

“We have already given an ultimatum to the BJP leadership to tell the state administration to simplify the ‘cumbersome’ process of disbursing relief package announced by the Union Government,” Labha Ram Gandhi, leader of the West Pakistan refugees said, adding, “If the process was not simplified within a stipulated time, we will organise a parallel function near the venue of the Prime Minister’s rally to teach arrogant state BJP leadership a lesson.”

The West Pakistan refugees have asked state BJP leaders to address their grievances before January 31. The PM is going to address a public rally at Vijaypur in Samba district on February 3. “We don’t want to adopt a confrontationist path, but the patience of helpless refugees is running out”, he said, adding that displaced people were fed up with the repeated assurances of the BJP leadership.

Gandhi, addressing a meeting of the West Pakistan refugees at Swankhamore in Samba district on Tuesday, exhorted them to prepare for a “decisive battle” to get a solution to their problems. “It is really unfortunate that the relief package announced by the Union Home Ministry six months ago is yet to be implemented on ground due to the discriminatory approach of the J&K administration,” he said.

On Sunday, the BJP general secretary Ram Madhav had promised to take up this issue with the Centre as well as the Governor’s administration to make the disbursement of the “package” easy.

“Like refugees from Pakistan occupied Jammu-Kashmir, relief disbursement process for the dislocated people from West Pakistan will also be simplified so that all deserving people get benefit from the package announced by the Centre,” Madhav had stated.

The state administration has told the West Pakistan refugees to submit a proof to establish that their names figured in the voters’ lists of the 1951 or 1957 parliamentary elections which were never held in the state.
