The sky remained overcast for most part of the day today thereby resulting in dip in maximum temperature in the district. Agricultural experts said the present weather conditions were conducive for wheat crop season.

As per the Agri-Met Department of the regional station of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Bathinda, there was mild rain on Thursday and the sky remained overcast on Friday.

The maximum temperature on Friday was recorded at 16.5 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature was recorded at 11 degree Celsius. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was 23 degree Celsius and the minimum temperature was 10.2 degree Celsius.

Meteorology Department officials said on cloudy days temperature often remains on the higher side as compared to sunny days as the evaporation process takes more time on cloudy days. However, rain coupled with overcast sky added to the chill in the air on Friday.

The cold wave has also boosted the sale of geysers, heaters, blowers and water heating rods. The sale of woollens has also picked up in the city.

Farmers in the region are upbeat over the prospect that the recent change in weather will bode well for the wheat crop.

Notably, hailstorm in some parts of the state in the past week had destroyed wheat and potato crops. However, rain on Thursday and subsequent chill in the air would prove fruitful for farmers, said agriculture experts.

Jaswinder Kumar, Agriculture Development Officer, District Agriculture Department, said: “The rain on Thursday will be beneficial for farmers as weather conditions are conducive for wheat crop growth now. However, it can be bit harmful for mustard flowers in the region.”
