Chandigarh, January 22

Punjab lost 16 wickets in a day and were staring at defeat at the end of the second day’s play against hosts Rajasthan in their Cooch Behar Trophy match at KL Saini Stadium in Jaipur on Tuesday.

Following on, the visitors were tottering at 218/6 in their second innings despite Arjun Azad’s unbeaten 102. Sumit Sharma was batting on five at the draw of stumps.

Punjab batsmen did not learn from their mistakes and played some loose shots to end the day in a precarious position. Opener Pukhraj Mann, once again failed with the bat, as he edged R Bishnoi to wicketkeeper SA Ahuja on one. Nehal Wadhera made a 29-ball 26 before falling to AM Singh.

Azad then in company of skipper Prabhsimran Singh added 99 runs for the third wicket to take the Punjab total to 150. The duo was separated when Prabhsimran was claimed by Bishnoi on 44.

Salil Arora and Deepin Chitkara fell in quick succession as Punjab slumped to 174/5. Both the batsmen failed to open their accounts.

Ridham Satyawan was the last wicket to fall in the day, stumped by SA Ahuja off M Suthar on 15.

Visitors rattled

Earlier, Punjab were bowled out for a meager 59 while chasing Rajasthan’s first innings total of 291. AM Singh and R Bishnoi shared nine wickets between them as the hosts gained a 232-run lead and asked the visitors to follow on.

Punjab batsmen lacked application and failed to negotiate the pace and guile of the Rajasthan bowlers. Azad and Prabhsimran Singh were the only Punjab batsmen to score in double digits. While Prabhsimran fell to AM Singh on 18, Azad was cleaned up by Bishnoi after facing 66 balls for his 27.

Six of the Punjab batsmen failed to open their account in the first innings.

For the hosts, AM Singh claimed 5/22, while Bishnoi took 4/14.

Decent total

At the start of the day, Rajasthan managed to add 30 more runs to their overnight total of 261 before losing their remaining four wickets to close their innings on 291.

Suthar, who was batting on 25 yesterday, was the first to go, cleaned up by Sumit Sharma on 27. R Choudhary added eight runs to his yesterday’s score of 57 before he became Sharma’s second victim of the day.

Bishnoi was dismissed by Vashish Mehra on four, while AM Mathur fell to Sharma on one. AM Singh remained not out on five.

Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab, claiming 5/89. Ketan Mankotia picked 2/44, while Amit Shukla bagged 2/48.
