Workers of seven farmer organisations staged a dharna at the District Administrative Complex (DAC), demanding fulfillment of their demands pending for long. The organisations also presented a memorandum of the demands to the officials.
Kanwalpreet Singh Pannu, state convener, Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, and Harjinder Singh Tanda, state president of the Azad Kisan Sangharsh Committee, Punjab, condemned the state government for not waiving the entire debt of the farmers. They reminded the Congress of its promise made before the Assembly elections.
Leaders said that the law and order situation in the state had exacerbated as the “government was unable to take stern action against drug peddlers”. The protesters also expressed concern over “lack of employment opportunities” in the state in the last two years. They said that the organisations would not allow the auction of land of the debt-ridden farmers.
