Jalandhar, January 14
Members of the Punjab Private Schools’ Association on Monday flayed the state government’s decision to shut 2,100 associate schools in the 2019-2020 academic session.
Addressing mediapersons here, association members said if the government did not relax its policies to grant recognition to these schools until February 15, they would hold a statewide protest.
Tejpal Singh, secretary general of the association, said the future of more than 4 lakh students and 50,000 teachers was at stake. He said these schools were extended recognition every year.
Tejpal said on the recommendations of a sub-committee of the Cabinet in February last year, it was ruled that 2,100 schools would be given extension till March 31, 2019, to fulfill the conditions for their affiliation. However, the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) had now released instructions to de-recognise these schools and has declared that the usual guidelines for their extension (to apply for affiliation with the board) would not apply for 2019-20. The associate schools would not be able to admit any new student from classes IX to XII after March 31.
Tejapl Singh said they had been approaching the Chief Minister, the Education Minister and the PSEB authorities for the last three months, but the situation was not made clear to them.
