Panchkula, November 4

The safety and security of students of several primary schools in the district is being compromised as boundary walls of these schools are either damaged or are yet to be constructed.

Sources in the District Elementary Education Office (DEEO) said they had taken up the matter with the higher authorities and also sent them estimate, but to no avail.

Interestingly, Haryana schools have not received funds for the construction of boundary walls since 2012. According to the DEEO, the Central Government had provided funds for the construction of rooms and separate washrooms for boys and girls, but no funds had been received for the construction of boundary walls.

Sources further said one of the primary schools in Haripur village in Sector 4 here was declared unsafe more than one year ago. The department had sent estimates worth Rs 98.18 lakh to the higher authorities on August 21 last year, but they were yet to get approval for the same.

As the building was declared unsafe, classes were being taken in the open and could create trouble for children as the temperature had started plummeting due to intermittent rain witnessed on Saturday.

Teachers on the condition of anonymity said as the boundary wall from one side of the school was damaged, they parked their two-wheelers outside the classrooms.

District Elementary Education Officer Urmil Bangad said they had forwarded the requests for repair or construction of boundary walls in schools to the higher authorities. She said they had already sent the estimates regarding the construction of boundary walls at Haripur school to the higher authorities and were awaiting funds.
