President Ram Nath Kovind had words of praise for both soldiers and farmers of the state, as he said they had proven themselves on border as well as in the field of agriculture.

The President was addressing a gathering during the closing ceremony of the 4th Agri Leadership Summit 2019 held at India International Horticulture Market (IIHM), Gannaur, Sonepat, on Sunday.

He launched the ‘Digital Kisan App’ that would provide information about unique initiatives and innovations in the field of agriculture. Condemning the Pulwama terror attack on the CRPF convoy three days ago, the President said: “Along with every Indian, I condemn this heinous crime. The entire country is in mourning with the bereaved families. On behalf of the country, I express gratitude to our brave soldiers and security personnel.”

Haryana has truly realised the saying ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’ as most of its families have one son working as a farmer and another as a soldier, he added. He exhorted stakeholders to work jointly towards creating an atmosphere that could inspire farmers’ children to take up farming enthusiastically. “This would not only enable farmers to become more prosperous but also attract entrepreneurs of other areas to invest in the agriculture sector. Haryana could play a leading role in the nationwide efforts in this direction,” he said.

Earlier, the President felicitated nine farmers, including a woman, with ‘Haryana Krishi Ratna Award’.

Appreciating the efforts made by the state government for effective implementation of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme, he said the sex ratio in 2011 was 830 against 1,000 boys but at present it had gone up to 914.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, meanwhile, said the theme of the summit was to find ways to double the farmers’ income by 2022.

Earlier, Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare Minister OP Dhankar welcomed the President and briefed the audience about summit.

Governor Satyadeo Narain Arya and Finance Minister Captain Abhimanyu were also present on the occasion.

The President presented the ‘Haryana Krishi Ratna Award’ to nine farmers, including a woman, in recognition of their outstanding contribution. He also awarded Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University at Hisar with the newly introduced ‘Haryana Kisan Ratna Award’.

All praise for ‘Chota rajya, bada yogdan’

Haryana ranks second in contribution of food grains to the central pool. Owing to its contribution of over 14 crore quintal in the central pool, it can surely be said chota rajya, bada yogdan (small state, big contribution). It is a matter of pride that Haryana currently ranks second in the country in milk production… it also provides 60 per cent of the basmati exported by the country. —Ram Nath Kovind, President
